2026 Southline Basketball
All Southline basketball games are played at Center Court Sports in Cheektowaga on Sundays. Teams are created after evaluations are held. Practices are held at local schools and are provided by coaches once teams have been created for the season.
2026 Basketball Rules
- Games are played on Sundays at Center Court Sports, unless otherwise noted. 2. Games will have two 18 minute halves. Length may be altered due to gym time constraints. 3. The clock is continuous except the last minute of each half or OT. Stops on made baskets in the last min of 2nd half. 4. With 18 minute halves, substitutions will be every 4 ½ minutes of game time.
- If 10 players are present, there must be 5 players substituting on every shift, with no player sitting two consecutive shifts.
If 9 or 8 players are present, no player may sit out two consecutive shifts and no player may play three consecutive shifts.
If 7 players are present, all players must sit out once every four shifts.
If 6 players are present, all players must sit out once every six shifts.
These substitution rules WILL BE FOLLOWED by all teams and will be monitored by the league.
- The last shift of the 1st half and the first shift of the 2nd half are considered consecutive shifts. The first overtime period can be treated like the start of a new game, with all subsequent overtime periods following the previous substitution rules.
This should be about getting everybody equal playing time and not running up the score or embarrassing another team.
- In the last minute of each half, the clock will stop on all whistles. The clock will restart after the ball is “touched” in play after the inbounds pass. Exception: See Rule # 12, Ages 7 – 11.
- Each team gets two 30 second timeouts per half. Unused timeouts do not roll over.
- Tied games will play 3 minute overtime periods until a winner is decided. Subsequent OT periods may see the playing time reduced (i.e. 2 minutes) due to Center Court Sports gym use time constraints.
- Each team gets one 30 second timeout per OT session. Unused timeouts do not roll over. 11. Due to time constraints the Southline Board of Directors reserve the right to declare a game a “Tie.”
- DEFENSE – 7 – 9 Age Group: “man to man” is required. For all other age groups, “man to man” is encouraged…..zone is allowed.
For 7 – 9 and 10 – 11 Age Groups
The defensive team may not guard their player until the offensive player has crossed the “three quarters court line” (there is a lined area within 10 feet of the center court line on the Center Court Sports floor).
There will be no press at any time.
If the clock is stopped with 10 seconds or less and a team is in-bounding the ball, the clock will not start until the ball advances past the “three quarters court line.” (Example: Team A scores to cut Team B’s lead to one point with 9 seconds left. Team B inbounds the ball. Because there is no pressing, Team
B would have to cross Team A’s three quarter court line before the clock will start. This will prevent stalling near half court to simply run out the clock.)
- For 12 & Up Age Group (Div 1)
Same as above with the exception being the last two minutes of each half and the last one minute of overtime. For these times, the defense can full-court press as long as they are not up by 10 or more points. The clock will start upon the first touch of the ball when pressing is available.
- At no time during the game can more than two defenders guard one offensive player, even if that player gives up his/her dribble. No triple teaming! The defensive team will be issued a warning and the offensive team will retain possession and be awarded the ball for an in-bounds pass. If triple teams become a constant offense, it will then become a team foul with each violation. If the team committing this foul has reached 6 or less team fouls, the offensive team will be awarded an in-bounds pass. If this results in the 7th or greater team foul, the offensive team will receive bonus free throws. (There will be only one warning per game per team for triple teaming.)
- Each team will be allowed six team fouls per half. The seventh, eight and ninth fouls in each half will result in a “one & one” bonus free shooting situation (unless the foul occurs in the act of shooting, which equates to two free throws). Once a team has reached 10 team fouls, all fouls will result in the offensive team being awarded two bonus free throws. The bonus situation carries over to overtime.
- Any player committing six fouls in one game has fouled out.
- The first half of each game, and any overtime periods, will begin with a center court jump ball. All other jump ball situations will alternate possession from team to team, including the start of the 2nd half.
- If the ball becomes lodged between the rim and backboard, the possession arrow will determine which team gets the ball.
- A minimum of 4 players are needed to constitute a legal lineup. Five-Minute grace period from scheduled start time will be allowed. “Call ups” for a player from the age division immediately below the “short roster team” are allowed. After 5 minutes, a forfeit will be declared. NO EXCEPTIONS.
- Any player not fulfilling the monetary obligation to the league (registration fee and fundraising calendars) and any other financial obligations by the start of the second regular season game will not be allowed to play until such obligations are met!!!
- All calls made by the officials will be final. There will be no arguing with a referee or with a Southline Officials (If a referee feels the comments made by any coach, player or spectator is inappropriate, the referee has the right to eject such person from Center Court Sports property. A second ejection of the same person will result in a ban from Center Court Sports property until such person appears in front of a Southline Sports Review Board).
- Continual abuse of the “No Arguing” rule (# 21) could result in Southline removing you as a Southline coach.
- Each team is to have a head coach and one assistant coach.
- Coaches please instruct their parents to stand/sit under the baskets or across from the scorer’s table.
- All players/coaches/family members are expected to respect our practice facilities and Center Court Sports. Please clean up water bottles, garbage, etc. before you leave your practice gym and your team’s bench area on Sundays.
